Chocolate Bars with Menopause in Mind

Red Clover Extract – Red clover plants have compact clusters of rose-pink flowers that can be extracted into essential oils. It is widely used in traditional medicine to treat menopause symptoms and osteoporosis.
Red clover contains isoflavones. Some research has shown a connection between isoflavone intake and a decrease in osteoporosis risk. The high isoflavone content is also believed to help relieve certain symptoms of menopause like hot flashes or night sweats.
The flavor of red clover is mild, vanilla-like, and pairs well with chocolate.
Wild Yam Extract – Wild yam plants have yellow, dangling clusters of stalkless flowers with 6 petals. The extract is often used as a “natural alternative” to estrogen therapy as it contains a chemical that can be converted into estrogen in lab tests.
Licorice Root Extract - Licorice Root is considered one of the world’s oldest herbal remedies. As the name suggests, it comes from the root of the licorice plant. It is native to Western Asia and Southern Europe, yet it is grown all over the world.
Clinical studies show that licorice root may have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects as well. Findings by the National Institutes of Health showed that “licorice root is effective in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes” which is why we include it in our chocolate bars. Dong Quai Root Extract - Dong Quai is a fragrant plant with clusters of small white flowers. The flower belongs to the same family as celery and carrots. For more than 2000 years, Dong Quai has been used as an herbal medication in China, Korea, and Japan.
Also known as the “female ginseng”, Dong Quai has been used for hundreds of years to help support a positive response to symptoms associated with menopause, including night sweats and hot flashes.

Vitex (Chasteberry) - The Vitex agnus-castus fruit, also known as chasteberry or monk’s pepper, is about the size of a peppercorn. This plant is typically used as an herbal remedy to help treat a variety of menopause symptoms including mood, poor sleep, night sweats, and hot flashes.
Vitex may also offer additional health benefits including:

- Reducing inflammation
- Bone repair

Black Cohosh Extract – The black cohosh plant is a member of the buttercup family and grows in North America. It is the most researched extract for menopause, and the most commonly used for menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, vertigo, sleep disturbances, nervousness, and irritability. It offers a bitter and pungent that melds well with the taste of chocolate and has a cooling effect on the body.
